The End of Sitting Screening 1:1
Barbara Visser
23 March 2015
Alongside the exhibition The End of Sitting, Barbara Visser created a film. The purpose of the film was to ensure the life of the project beyond the end date of the exhibition and to serve as a point of departure for ongoing academic discourse. The film consists of voiceovers from various experts layered over aesthetically arresting imagery from the exhibition itself. Throughout the course of a day, Visser documented people’s interaction with the 1:1 scale model of an alternate work landscape.
This film was then presented in March 2015 at Looiersgracht 60 in collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and Humanities (KNAW). Hosted in the same space in which the installation had previously been exhibited, the evening began with an introduction by architecture historian Thomas A.P. van Leeuwen. Van Leeuwen’s discussion of The End of Sitting in light of his project The Thinking Foot was followed by a reading of an excerpt from De Duimsprong by its author, Miek Zwamborn. The ensuing film screening of The End of Sitting Screening 1:1 was then followed by an explanation and a discussion with Barbara Visser, RAAAF and the public. The event and its participants sought to discuss the End of Sitting project, ascertain its impact and analyse its potential legacy for workspaces of the near future.
