Festival of Choices
13 June – 17 June 2018
Looiersgracht 60 presents the work of graduating students of the Sandberg Institute’s Fine Arts Masters course. Exhibiting students have spent the past two years further developing their artistic practice under the tutelage of prominent artists, designers, theorists and curators and a selection of noteworthy guest tutors. The Masters is headed by curator, writer and director of Kunstverein, Maxine Kopsa. An intensive thesis writing period and three modules – entitled Language, Image and Play/Object - form the basis of the course.
‘Language’ looked not only at the language in terms of what is seen, heard and written, but took a broader approach and explored how art is made and notions of what artistic practice can include. ‘Image’ focused on representation, time and context in various visual and audio-visual practices. This module emphasized the development of individual production strategies. Finally, ‘Play/Object’ used an interdisciplinary approach to address contemporary constructions of ‘performativity’. Looking at the creation and practice of production, the module paid particular attention to how objects interact with time, space and value. The resulting work of the students has found expression in a wide range of forms including film based, conceptual (text), digitally informed and object based pieces. The students’ work defies generalisation, however the works tend to be politically sensitive and formally stubborn.
Looiersgracht 60 has hosted Sandberg events in the past and is pleased to be welcoming the Institute back again for the Fine Arts graduation show. Previously, graduating Fine Arts students have exhibited their work independently, at various galleries and institutions throughout Amsterdam. This year, for the first time, the work of all graduating students will be exhibited simultaneously at one location: Looiersgracht 60. Festival of Choices is an exciting opportunity to see the works of all these promising young artists in one location.
