Sandberg Institute Graduation Show: Radical Cut-Up

For the last six years, Looiersgracht 60 has hosted Sandberg Institute events, and this summer we are excited to be hosting the graduation show of the Sandberg Institute Radical Cut-Up department. Radical Cut-Up is developed and directed by curator, writer and artist, Lukas Feireiss.

Within the context of an exponential growth in digital technologies that expand the production and circulation of images, text, sound and objects in contemporary life, this year’s Radical Cut-Up exhibition draws together the works of fifteen artists who copy, combine, create and celebrate experimental forms of creative production through the crafted fusion of disparate elements. Radical Cut-Up unites theory and practice, embracing ideas such as Jonathan Lethem’s ‘ecstasy of influence’ and regards artworks no longer as an endpoint but a moment within an infinite chain of contributions.

The Radical Cut-Up (RCU) Master programme critically examines and celebrates the emergence and evolution of the cut-up as the contemporary mode of creativity and dominant global model of cultural production today. The programme is based on a cooperative learning approach in which all participants interact with each other to facilitate individual as well as collective artistic development. Beyond disciplinary boundaries and conventional pedagogical models, the programme adopts the principles of cut-up not only as its conceptual and methodological foundations, but applies them directly by questioning the classical format of an institutionalised art school. Exhibiting students have spent the past two years further developing their artistic practice under the tutelage of prominent artists, designers, theorists and curators, including artist Amie Dicke, writer and photographer Charlie Koolhaas and urbanist and curator Michiel van Iersel.
