Artist Talk with Curator/Writer Amelia Groom

Ahead of her first major solo exhibition Repetition is a Form of Change (September 19 - October 20, 2024) German-New Zealand artist Sophie Rowley will join the third edition of Looiersgracht 60’s Public Research Residency programme – an initiative that supports artists and cultural practitioners with resources and presentation opportunities. The artist will expand on her existing project throughout her residency, utilising the space as her canvas to create a site-specific installation and limited-edition works for her upcoming show. During this period, Rowley will share her creative process with the public through two engaging events. Guests are invited to attend and engage with the artist and her works before their completion.

Join Sophie Rowley as she engages in a thought-provoking conversation with curator and writer Amelia Groom. With a PhD in Art History and Theory from the University of Sydney and experience as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (2021-2022), Amelia has contributed to renowned publications like Frieze, e-flux journal, Art Agenda, and more. Her work is often concerned with structures of time and the possibilities for re-routing them. Currently, Amelia is working on a book exploring art and anti-fascist activism through the lenses of environmental art practice and queer and trans ecologies.

Over the past three weeks, Sophie has transformed the grounds of Looiersgracht 60 into her creative studio. This event offers a unique opportunity to wander around the space and witness the artist’s process firsthand, viewing her research materials, prototypes, and models. Following the conversation, the audience is invited to ask questions and engage in discussions about the elements that shape the artist’s work.

This discussion begins at 17:00 on September 4, 2024, followed by a Q&A session with the audience and concluding with drinks. The programme is free of charge, but space is limited, so please reserve your spot by emailing info@looiersgracht60.org
